My Oedipus Complex
My Oedipus Complex by Frank O’Connor is a short story in which the main character Larry changes through the course of the story. In this essay I will briefly outline the main incidents in the story and I will then deal in detail the change in Larry’s personality and behaviour .
Summary
This is a short story about a boy called Larry who lives at home with his mother and his father who has recently returned home from the war. Larry is used to having all the attention from his mother. Being an only child he should not have to compete for his mothers attention but that all changed when his father returned home from the war, him and his father have their own personal war especially every night when they go to sleep but him and his father soon bond due to the arrival of a new born baby.
Life before dad lived at home
Before dad lived at home Larry got all the attention from his mother and each morning he woke up feeling like the sun, ready to illumine and rejoice. His life was so simple and clear and full of possibilities, this must have been the most peaceful period of his life. But now that his father was home he didn’t feel in the least like the sun, instead he was bored and so very, very cold because he had been kicked out of the bed and he longed for the warmth and depth of the big featherbed.
“This was the most peaceful period of my life”
This shows that even though his father is away at war Larry is still happy because he can get all the attention from his mother without having to compete with his dad.
Dad back from the war
When dad returned from the war Larry found him to be mysterious but he was not worried about him but soon after a while
